Sorry to hear about your friend. Remeber having health insurance doesn't keep you from getting sick, it only helps pay the bills once you get there.

Sorry you have to see your friend go thorugh this. I know it's hard but you must remember your just being there and offering support will do them so much good. Try and keep hope in your heart.

dude i love climbing - started about 2 years ago but have had problems find peeps who liked it as much as me to do it with. they have some nice indoor gyms around that I visit during the rainy season alot when you can't get outside. i already own my own equiptment to do the indoor climbing - though i have been outdoor once it tends to scare me a little more, less controll.

rcp! why did you wait until AFTER i left the bay area to get into all of these activities? i always got stuck climbing, hiking, camping, skiing, surfing, running, biking, etc with a bunch of aggro-boys because i didn't know any chicas who'd do that stuff with me! hmph.

1) For small things insurance companies assume you won't lie, and in general you don't or the lieing you do still doens't equal how much you pay them, hence there record profits if you ignore large scale natural disaster payouts. My insurance company encourages us to take photos of our posessions so that they can easily verify what own. However, for the most part it is the honor system. Most insurance has a deducatable and a cap value. I know my insurance will only cover about $5k in computer equiptment...

My understanding is as follows:

1. the insurance company assumes you won't lie. hence, all of the insurance fraud. and the very large insurance legal departments. and the resultant high cost of insurance.

2 & 3. the car on the right always has the right-of-way (if both cars approach the intersection/street at the same time). however, in situation #2, it seems that it would also depend on the amount of traffic on the street. because the guy on the left is turning right into the nearest lane, traffic might allow him to turn before the guy on the right can cross the near lane to turn left into the far lane.

Hmm, Maui scores on pretty much all accounts, though it's a bit weak on our examples of historical culture: there are petroglyphs, but not really architectural wonders, unless you count natural ones like volcanoes.

well if don't want to much of a flight, I'd go to Puerto Rico - San Juan for some fun in the city but we did the little island of Vieques when I went also and the beaches where amazing! Don't know about this time of year though.

It doesn't get really bad till late in the season. September/October are very wet. June/July are quite pleasant. I'll be there in August, which was when I went last time, and it rains occasionally, and is overcast maybe half the time.

totally do your honeymoon there. you'd have a great time. :)

i was thinking of thailand too (remember, that was one of our honeymoon options?)...just keep in mind that monsoon season runs from may - november. i think their monsoon might be similar to what we experienced in costa rica - heavy afternoon showers, but still warm and sunny the rest of the day. perfect weather for falling off of a horse into a cow paddy. ;)

actually, it sounds to me like you're quite sane. except maybe for the anterior inferior frontal gyrus thing. anterior cingulate cortex is much, much funnier.

thailand meets all your criteria except for the flight thing... it's probably about 16 hours. if you go in august, i'll give you my thai cell number and maybe join you sunbathing for a day.

closer to home... brazil! (except that it's winter there) mexico! bermuda doesn't have ancient ruins but does have old colonial forts.

i eagerly await your missive telling me how you really feel about me. ;)

you can come visit! it's warm, there are lots of beaches and clear water, i can speak to you in german if you'd like, we start the remodel in a couple weeks so the house will be an architectural ruin, you're welcome to take as many showers as you like, and it's a short flight!

on the off-chance that a seattle home renovation trip does not sound ideal to you, have you thought about mexico? i don't mean the "drunk americans making fools of themselves"-infested parts of mexico, of course. the yucatan pensinsula has some great mayan ruins (palenque, uxmal and tulum are three of my favorite), along with beautiful beaches and relatively affordable cabanas in tulum. if you want to stay west, baja has some beautiful places that aren't too ridiculously touristy. or there's sayulita, just north of puerto vallarta.

of course, there's always hawaii. :)
