it's really not that funny

i think i'm losing it.

the signs:
1. the phrase "anterior inferior frontal gyrus" made me really crack up today. like, i almost fell over laughing about it. but the thing is, there is NOTHING absolutely whatsoever humorous about it. like. at all. even for a nerd.
2. that i yelled at the woman who came into my office insisting that we were a neurology office, even after i politely tried to direct her elsewhere. after some pigheaded insistence on her part, i really do mean that i yelled at her.
3. that i'm writing everyone to tell them honestly, sincerely, how i feel about them. even if it ain't pretty.
4. i made an impromptu back massage appointment last night. i bit $70. ouch.
5. i've started saying "NO."
6. last night, i ate a tub of field greens and lettuce. and tub really *is* the right word.

i think i need a vacation. no cell phones, no one from work calling me to ask me how to plug in a mouse, or where the printer paper is, or how to do this or not. no more people calling me asking me for free therapy sessions about their crazed mom or some personality disorder. i want to go away. the three manuscripts and 5 poster submissions can wait. the montages of bilateral activation can wait. heck, even my piece of sh*t thesis can wait. i'll defend in august. where should we go? boss finally gave me the word, i'm ready to take the plunge. . .

HELP ME!!

here are my criteria:
1. warm
2. beaches and lots of clear water
3. foreign languages - ok.
4. culture : read ruins, architectural wonders - yes, yes, yes!
5. sleeping on the ground, camping, lack of showers - most definitely NOT ok.
6. 24 hour flight- not ok.

you can come visit! it's warm, there are lots of beaches and clear water, i can speak to you in german if you'd like, we start the remodel in a couple weeks so the house will be an architectural ruin, you're welcome to take as many showers as you like, and it's a short flight!

on the off-chance that a seattle home renovation trip does not sound ideal to you, have you thought about mexico? i don't mean the "drunk americans making fools of themselves"-infested parts of mexico, of course. the yucatan pensinsula has some great mayan ruins (palenque, uxmal and tulum are three of my favorite), along with beautiful beaches and relatively affordable cabanas in tulum. if you want to stay west, baja has some beautiful places that aren't too ridiculously touristy. or there's sayulita, just north of puerto vallarta.

of course, there's always hawaii. :)

actually, it sounds to me like you're quite sane. except maybe for the anterior inferior frontal gyrus thing. anterior cingulate cortex is much, much funnier.

thailand meets all your criteria except for the flight thing... it's probably about 16 hours. if you go in august, i'll give you my thai cell number and maybe join you sunbathing for a day.

closer to home... brazil! (except that it's winter there) mexico! bermuda doesn't have ancient ruins but does have old colonial forts.

i eagerly await your missive telling me how you really feel about me. ;)

i was thinking of thailand too (remember, that was one of our honeymoon options?)...just keep in mind that monsoon season runs from may - november. i think their monsoon might be similar to what we experienced in costa rica - heavy afternoon showers, but still warm and sunny the rest of the day. perfect weather for falling off of a horse into a cow paddy. ;)

It doesn't get really bad till late in the season. September/October are very wet. June/July are quite pleasant. I'll be there in August, which was when I went last time, and it rains occasionally, and is overcast maybe half the time.

totally do your honeymoon there. you'd have a great time. :)

you could join team uni for a weekend in sd. :) you aren't required to join in comiccon festivities if you don't want to. after all, i hear that san diego is good for other things too. :)

well if don't want to much of a flight, I'd go to Puerto Rico - San Juan for some fun in the city but we did the little island of Vieques when I went also and the beaches where amazing! Don't know about this time of year though.

Hmm, Maui scores on pretty much all accounts, though it's a bit weak on our examples of historical culture: there are petroglyphs, but not really architectural wonders, unless you count natural ones like volcanoes.
