More of the same (Warren Ellis)
I'm a fan, generally, of Marvel's Ultimate universe. It has the simple strength, for now, of being able to dump all the history that goes into regular Marvel comics. That space can then be used to (1) reinvent concepts and (2) have a genuine chronological progression.
I expect this to break down, but for now it's a good deal.
That said, I recently picked up book one of Ultimate Nightmare, the "Ultimate" take on Galactus. I picked it up despite it being by Warren Ellis (whose writing I used to like, before I read too much of it). Unfortunately, it's a typical Ellis book, rife with secret government programs that wantonly abuse people, lines like "sixty levels above top secret" and everyone spouting macho, sarcastic dialogue.
I find it peculiar that Ellis, who makes such a strong case for not tying comics to the superhero genre, continues to rewrite the same story.
Of the authors whose Ultimate work I've read, I've really enjoyed Millar, Bendis and Vaughan. I expected this for Bendis and Vaughan, but it was nice to enjoy MIllar's writing, since he was kinda fifty/fifty on The Authority (I liked Earth Inferno, but not his first story).
