parakkum.com is go

I have a new site:

www.parakkum.com

It showcases my writing and sequential work (that is, comics!), along with the lovely art of my collaborator, James Nguyen. Check it out, read and enjoy, and let me know what you think (and if there are any remaining broken links I didn't catch).

Woohoo.

New thing learned today: Photoshop and the web

I just fixed ten images on parakkum.com that weren't working properly on most browsers.

As it happens, Photoshop CS uses an extended sort of jpg that Firefox, IE and Mozilla don't appreciate. I've since used the "save for web" option to make them into something that most browsers should like, and added a note for people to please email me if they still find anything broken.

Pesky, that. They slipped through the cracks because I didn't test everything on the site for browser compatibility and happened to be working in Safari, which does play well with Photoshop CS.

So parakkum.com now offers three complete sequential stories, three more partial stories, three proposals and a resume and a site link. I may add some of my short fiction later on today. For now, though, back to culling the scientific literature.

My literature: the early years

I recently scanned one of my earliest pieces of work, Pink Cat and Pink Rat, a collection of stories drawn and narrated by me in 1981 and 1982, with helpful lettering work by my grandmother, Mary Mesnier, and my sister Alison.

I've put it on my comic and writing site, www.parakkum.com. You can find it under "showcase" on the main page, or you can just start reading it here.

I've transcribed the text just in case you can't read the handwriting in the scans.

A reporter discusses the portfolio review process, and us

As I mentioned previously, a reporter from San Diego CityBEAT interviewed us about the portfolio review process, and had the good fortune to be there during James' DarkHorse review as well.

Here's the final article

I think she covered it pretty well, with a low error count for a newspaper article (I wrote three scripts for James featuring three different characters, rather than just one for Superman). Overall, a good view of how portfolio review works at one of the biggest comic conventions around.

I also like that James and I are having "a platonic Comic-Con romance."

But I refuse to be Sam. Frodo all the way.

Inhabit: best in color? grayscale? pure black and white?

If you have a moment, please take a look (hopefully a second look at this point) at the Inhabit minicomic, with the following question in mind: Would this look best in color, grayscale or just plain old black and white? I'm really interested in your responses, so please do comment on this entry, too.

You can click here to start reading the minicomic. Note that the cover already has gray tones.

More comics to read! (Inhabit)

I've updated parakkum.com to add in nine complete pages form the first issue of a new Inhabit story. If clicking one clickthrough from the front page is too much effort, you can go directly to the cover by clicking here.

So go, read, let me know what you think. We've already been turned down by Image, sadly, but will continue to market ourselves to other publishers in hopes of having someone help us publish it.
