Kendo terms

Kendo has its own (Japanese) vocabulary. Some terms, chiefly for my benefit, in the extended.

keiko practice
keiko-gi jacket
hakama skirt (Hammer pants, really)
mae-himo belt
tare waist protector
do body armor
tenugui hand towel (worn on the head as a sweat band)
men helmet
kote glove
shinai bamboo practice sword
tsuba sword guard
tsuka hilt
suki opening for an attack

sonkyo knee-bend squat
noto reseathing the sword

chudan-no-kamae middle guard position

okuri-ashi sliding step, leading with right foot

shomen suburi moving the shinai to strike center men
kote suburi moving to strike kote
choyaku suburi jumping suburi

shomen-uchi center men strike
migi-kote-uchi right forearm strike
migi-do-uchi right body strike

kirikaeshi continuous striking of right and left men (it goes shomen, taiatari [body check], then alternating men)
