Review: Cyrus Chestnut at Mojo's

S introduces you to the Mojo Club in Hamra to hear the "the best jazz pianist of his generation" (Time Magazine), affable Mr Cyrus 'Nutman' Chestnut.

Chestnut takes the keys of a Yamaha alone. The owner of the club explains earlier to you that local musicians don't do justice to visiting stars, with only limited practice time. Softly spoken Chestnut blends "spontaneous composition" (his words) into piece after piece of dense, chordal bluesy jazz. The full house respond to the honkey-tonk.

Rating: ** (out of four)
