Cancer Drinking style:
Cancer is a comfort drinker -- and an extra wine
with dinner or an after-work beer or six can be
extra comforting, can't it, Cancer darling?
Like fellow water signs Scorpio and Pisces,
Crabs must guard against lushery. Cancers are
brilliant at ferreting out secret parties and
insinuating themselves on VIP lists -- and, in
true Hollywood style, Cancers are never really
drunk; instead, they get "tired and
emotional" (read: weepy when lubricated).
But there's nothing better than swapping
stories (and spit) over a few bottles of inky
red wine with your favorite Cancer. Even your
second-favorite Cancer will do. The sign also
rules the flavor vanilla, and you'd be adored
if you served up vanilla vodka and soda.

cool, funny animation

kwc already posted about this, but it was so cool that i thought i would post it here for the people that don't read all my friends' blogs. (what do you mean you have a life? :))

new amazon wishlist feature

i just thought it was pretty cool. for my amazon wishlist, i sometimes just post books that i'm interested in getting but not ready to do so yet. that could be because i have too many books to read right now or because i'm going through a "i hate stuff" phase or a feeling poor phase.

and then there are stuff that i really want, but i feel poor or just haven't found an excuse that is acceptable for me to spend more money.

now, on the amazon wishlist, you can prioritize the things you want. there's even a "don't buy me this" feature, which i think is great. it frees me to add things on my wishlist without the fear of someone actually buying it for me. :)

i certainly hope that it doesn't dissolve some people into feeling guilty about not getting something that is a "must have" item. you know, "oh.... this is a must have item, but i don't think it's cool. i think this other thing is cool, but they only rated it as a like to have." which honestly is overthinking the issue, but it's the type of agonizing vicious cycle i can find myself in sometimes. :)

hmmm.... no agent orange?

so.... according to the blank club agent orange is supposed to play on sunday night.

probably won't go then. oh well.

means i can do my homework. :)

check out fumi's work

fumi is a cute japanese chick in my animation/illustration class. she wears street punk clothes, has multiple piercings and draws cute little bunnies and girls on everyone's sketchbooks and my chopstick wrapper. as a greeeting, she'll kick your butt or cuddle you from the back, depending on her mood. like many cute asian girls, she has a dark streak inside...as evidenced by her work.

fumi's awesome work

concerts concerts concerts

ok... so a classmate (sophorn, for those of you who met him) has just told me that agent orange is playing at the blank club in san jose this friday.

i'm going to a howie day and stereophonics concert on saturday.

i caved in and bought a ticket for the liz phair concert on monday.

so..... is it foolish of me to want to go to the agent orange thing on friday? :) tell me, please. :)

oh yeah, i just got the FLCL soundtrack vol. 1 as well as the FLCL series in the mail. i don't think FLCL will necessarily be palatable to everyone. it's crazy, fun, spastic, and on the 5th episode out of 6 i still have no clue what is going on. just as you think you know what is going on, it confounds you again.

as for the music, it's great. a band called the pillows. they're awesome. :) if you're curious, i'll play some for you.

chatting with my prof

i stayed and talked to my typrography instructor after class for about 1.5 hours (this must be the vestigial remains of my teacher's petness as a child).

we talked about art. graphic design. illustrators and what kind of jobs they do. how i got into art from being a very enthusiastic pre-med. what i need to focus on.

more and more, i get the feeling that i want to have a narrative aspect to my illustration rather than animation or working as a professional illustrator. this will probably manifest itself as graphic novels or children's books.

knowing this, i have a few things i need to concentrate on:
- figure out who i am and how i see the world
- figure out how i want to describe how i see the world on paper (lots of experimentation with different styles, materials, etc)
- figure out what i want to convey to the world through my art
- develop conviction

and of course...to draw like a madwoman.

it helps to know my priorities.

and let's face it. i need to stop waffling. so what if going into art and the world of illustrated narration is scary, uncertain and frowned upon by my parents and relatives? in the end, i will need to be accountable for my own life. and even if it's scary, it's what i feel like i need to do.

that means i just have to suck it up and deal with it.

hormones? fatigue? changes in life?

people have heard me complain about this before...

you see, i never used to cry. well, scratch that. i cried, but not frequently, and definitely not in front of other people.

maybe it's been a break down of my "tough" exterior. maybe it's hormones (though technically, there shouldn't be any fluctuations there anymore). maybe it's my doing art instead of being premed.

but dammit, i'm like crying all the time now. i cry at sappy momentes in movies (as long as the whole movie isn't a saccarine mess), i cry at happy momentes in movies, i cry when i moved by beautiful quotes from books, when i'm sad or angry...

it's all out of control now. i don't get it!

it makes me feel like an emotional ninny. :P and it seems like something i need to get used to.

poopie! >(

Metamanda's Weblog: yet another personality test

my results:

Type 2 (helper): 6
Type 4 (individualist): 5
Type 5 (investigator):4
Type 6 (loyalist): 4
Type 7 (enthusiast): 4
Type 9 (peacemaker):4
Type 1 (reformer): 3
Type 3 (achiever): 3

if you want the breakdown of all the types, try metamanda's post.

i'll just write down my top two. still, it doesns't seem like i am strongly any single one type, as most of my scores seem distributed evenly:

Type Two
The Helper
The caring, interpersonal type. Twos are empathetic, sincere, and warm-hearted. They are friendly, generous, and self-sacrificing, but can also be sentimental, flattering, and people-pleasing. They are well-meaning and driven to be close to others, but can slip into doing things for others in order to be needed. They typically have problems with possessiveness and with acknowledging their own needs. At their Best: unselfish and altruistic, they have unconditional love for others.

Type Four
The Individualist
The introspective, romantic type. Fours are self-aware, sensitive, and reserved. They are emotionally honest, creative, and personal, but can also be moody and self-conscious. Withholding themselves from others due to feeling vulnerable and defective, they can also feel disdainful and exempt from ordinary ways of living. They typically have problems with melancholy, self-indulgence, and self-pity. At their Best: inspired and highly creative, they are able to renew themselves and transform their experiences.

remodeling my blog

things will look a little doofy or ugly for a few days and i play around with my appearance settings on and off.

please excuse the ugliness :)

February 18, 2004

i am honorary rabbit

there are several ways that rabbits show you this, but a phenomenal way was last night.

beau hopped onto my bed, which the rabbits like to do, but this time while i was still on it. then he licked my leg and rested next to it for a good half hour. he did this once before, the day i was leaving for winter break.

it's really sweet. he licks me, then grooms himself, then huddles down next to me. the fact that he doesn't like being touched by people makes this kind of thing even that much more special. :)

quirkyalone? what the heck is this?

i'm feeling burnt out so i thought i'd procrastinate some more. it all started with the realization that i hadn't read anyone's blogs for the last week.

according to the quirkyalone quiz i am either very quirkyalone or quirkytogether(?).

"How quirkyalone are you?
Your score was 90. Very quirkyalone:
Relatives may give you quizzical looks, and so may friends, but you know in your heart of hearts that you are following your inner voice. Though you may not be romancing a single person, you are romancing the world. Celebrate your freedom on National Quirkyalone Day, February 14th!"

"How quirkyalone are you?
Your score was 80. Somewhat quirkyalone (otherwise known as quirkytogether):
You are probably part of a mysterious group of people, the quirkytogethers. You share many of our quirky qualities, but you manage to find yourself, on a regular basis, in a coupled situation. Interesting."

my actual score is 85. :P but they didn't have a description for that. they just kept saying they couldn't calculate my score, which was weird, since they already had.

i guess this means that you can't be just a quirkyalone in theory?

i think more people would want to be quarkyalones than they actually are. which matches up with the info on the quirkyalone website.

my first thought on reading about this phenomenon was that "there can't really be a whole of lot quirkyalones, then." the websites says maybe 5% of the population, as they are romantic rebels against mandated coupledom. after all, it's just easier to mentally understand the idea that people don't have to be in a couple to be happy and that relationships aren't worth it unless it's with THE one, but it's pretty damn hard in this society to be happy being alone and not feel challenged by the not-so-subtle pressures to be in a couple (this is where the rebelling comes in), whether you want to be or whether it's the best person for you or not.

for me, i think i would rather be alone than waste time in a couple with someone that doesn't suit me. i guess that makes me a quirkyalone. i've decided that parakkum is someone that is worth the time/effort/pains that relationships can sometimes bring into your life (let's face it, relationships aren't always in an idyllic state). i guess that makes me a quirkytogether?

it seems to me that you can't truly be a quirkyalone without liking who you are. honestly, it's hard to love the world around you when you don't love yourself.

what is an artist?

i don't mean in just the painting/drawing/mixed media kind of sense, but in everything...

a couple of quotes from a story i recently read, called Babette's Feast:

"Poor?" said Babette. She smiled as if to herself. "No. I shall never be poor. I told you that I'm a great artist. A great artist, Mesdames, is never poor. We have something, Mesdames, of which other people know nothing."

"Through all the world there goes one long cry from the heart of the artist: Give me leave to do my utmost!"

concerts i want to attend...

Howie Day with Stereophonics at Warfield on 2/28, sat @ 8pm.

and in looking that up, i found out that Liz Phair is also playing at warfield on 3/1, mon @ 8pm.

i could probably make it to the howie day concert, but not the liz phair, as i have class till 630pm that day.

too bad sj is a cultural void that gets avoided by all concerts. :P

February 15, 2004

a couple things

i will be staying home till tomorrow afternoon, after all.

there is a film festival called cinequest in san jose. i was surprised because i generally regard san jose as a cultural void, but some of the movies seemed interesting.

i will also be getting extra credit for up to two movies, so if people have specific movies they want to watch at times that are possible for me, you can have company! :)

as requested, i will at some point post the work that i tortured myself with on illustrator. it will probably be an extended post so that people's bandwith isn't obliterated.

howie day is coming to sf. he was a guy that opened for one of the tori amos concerts i went to. i actually liked him a whole lot and own to albums. if you're interested in going, it's on 2/28 at the warfield. :)

February 10, 2004

a quick update

i'm busy, so i will just summarize.

i spent over 20 hours busting my butt over a typography project with illustrator. i dropped the course. i found a new typography class that was just after the one i was enrolled in that seems more animator/illustrator friendly instead of catering just to graphic designers.

i'm woefully behind in my schoolwork and won't be getting any sleep until the weekend.

going home from 13-15 to help with and celebrate my sister's birthday belatedly.

i'm feeling a little underaccomplished around some of my contemporaries in class. it's those times that i have to remind myself that i've only been doing art for the last 1.5 years and stop comparing myself to people who've been working at this stuff since high school or earlier. and don't even start thinking of how cool the people who have been in the industry for 10, 20, 30+ years. i need to stop discouraging myself by setting ridiculous standards for myself.

on the plus side, i learned a lot of illustrator within a weekend. :) it makes me look forward to even more classes that i'll be taking in the next few years.

i've decided to take summer school instead of looking for a job for the summer. it'll be better overall for me to learn my stuff and get to work than to putz around with a job that i don't want.

i'm hoping that once the craziness of beginning of the semester is over and i actually caught up with all my classes that i'll have a social life again. it's been hard enough to find stuff for myself to eat.

i have a lot of shit to do and crap to read. interesting shit and crap, but a lot of it nonetheless.

ciao. :)

oh yeah.... i have a hankering for chocolate. nummy nummy! know of any good chocolate places in the south bay area?

seeing how long my "summary" has been, i think you can tell that i've been busy out of my mind. icky. i hate that. i think this is why i want chocolate. :)

February 09, 2004

late night revelations

1. i am getting old and no longer able to do these late hours
2. i'm really glad that i'm not going to be a graphic designer. instead of losing sleep in front of my computer, i get to lose sleep drawing millions of pictures and in the animation lab
3. illustrator is still a pain, and not for the feint of heart (i.e. me)
4. it's late, i shouldn't be trying to figure anything out
5. even at this hour, i still found the wedding planner very saccarine and annoying. it doesn't help that i think j lo's height in her acting career was in out of sight
6. i think my spelling suffers when i'm this tired

good night everyone

oh yeah....
7. if my printer doesn't work, i will kill someone/thing. not my bunnies, though i think they are trying to destroy my apartment. they are a little spazzy lately. i think it's because spring is coming.

February 08, 2004

illustrator is kicking my a**

or rather... i guess at this point it's the shear amount of work i have to do with it. at least until i try to pick up a new skill, like making uniform pattern swatches and applying them to type.

so far i've learned to make clipping masks, change/edit size/rotation/color/mutilate type, select objects, make rectangles, etc.

of 21 squares that i have to design, i have so far done 10. i need to make 11 more before 1230 tomorrow. i think ken and parakkum will best understand why i feel like crying about this. :P

cool glossary of literary terms

i'm taking a film, literature and cultures class this semester. since this is an english class, i have to brush up on my literary terms and found this cool website. :)

glossary of literary terms

i am also watching a horrible old anime called "the knights of the zodiac". i should've taken the title as a clue to avoid this. alas, my curiosity got the better of me and now parakkum is torturing me with it.

tsk tsk.

where else would we hear of icki the phoenix? with big hair in all colors of the rainbow. :P

i wonder if this applies to people too...

"We never ever introduce 2 unaltered rabbits (for safety as well as pregnancy prevention), and consider any "bond" involving unneutered/unspayed juvenile buns to be possibly false and subject to change once the hormones kick in."
