thanksgiving weekend

overall, a preetty decent weekend with the family.

i had yummy food and was able to read and relax and forget about school for a little while.

my bunnies are back at my place now. :) and they seem to be happy. they like diane (the caretaker) well enough, but i think they enjoy being back at their home.

since they have a large open space to run around in again, they've been running around and trying out all the different chewables in the apartment again. mad, happy dashese all over. :)

it's cool to watch.

the un-telligent test

The Test Results Are In!
"You are a smooth chick."
You have a knack for greatness. For the record, you are:
82% Un-telligent!
which is significantly higher than the current average of 60%

Here is the custom report of your personality that led our team of geeks to conclude (with confidence) that you are resourceful and sly woman:

"The subject shows a very high level of intelligence, and her sense of observation is one of her best qualities. Considering this, she shows a lot of potential, but that's only part of the equation.

"Also, as much as we hate violence, an occasional mauling is one way to solve day-to-day problems like unpleasant coworkers or pesky door-to-door salesmen; she just isn't tough enough, sir, and she avoids any solution that involves violence.

"Finally, the subject displayed a poor (and a little bit boring) sense of humor, a fair and productive sense of morality, and a hot shot self-confidence. The balance of these three traits is important; high levels of confidence, medium levels of morality, and a good level of humor make for the strongest individuals."

Final Score: 82% Un-telligent

haha, no surprise here. i've always thought i had a touch of boring. :) i just get by on other mutant superpowers...

i stayed up later than i wanted to because i found bunny hating mail on a bunny info mailing list i'm on.

that person was a royal, selfish, stupid biotch.

anyway.... i thought i'd take this quiz to get things off my mind.

a wonderful day at berkeley

it's been a long time since i was able to visit berkeley in a relaxed manner and see some of my friends there. :)

i went to see my old pottery teacher's show. he lives in a very nice home in berkeley hills and has a show about twice a year, selling his wares and making some studio space for himself (every potter needs to do this at some point because they'll have too much stuff around otherwise).

it was really great to see him again. basically, i attribute my changing to art with his guidance, kind words of encouragement and support. he was understanding of the problems i was having with my parents, while gently pointing me to calm and serenity, tell me that my happiness is also something that is important (soomething that doesn't always come across from asian society).

he's also one of the nicest people i've ever met. and you can sense a inner peace, a child-like happiness and appreciation of life and general contentment with life.

he's my hero. :)

one of the few that i have, anyway. :)

because an artist's interpretation of life is always reflected in his work, and because i love my teacher's outlook on life, i always end up spending more money than i should when i go to his shows.

and we had an interesting talk about sculptors vs. potters. it came up because i was telling how i learned over time that i wasn't really all that interested in sculpture, but i loved pottery. pottery has a calm element about it, especially if you let go of your fixation on making a "good-looking" product. those "good-looking" things come about after you've practiced enough, even harder to achieve when you're all anal about it.

with sculpture... i have a hard time relating to the work. it's always presented on a formal level. you are given a set time and place to interact with the work.

with pottery... you have a new experience every time you drink/eat from your piece. you notice the glazes again, you notice the shape of the form that you have... it's just a wonderful calm experience.

we talked a little about how sculptor's don't really understand that. that they tend to have something to prove, something to express, something that is burning inside...

and i realized... i don't really want something burning inside. i want to impart peace and happiness in the environment around me by being happy and at peace inside. :)

i was telling him that i don't really ever regret going into art. i have my happy moments and my panicky moments, but those panicky moments aren't ever really about whether i should be doing art or not. rather, they are about "am i going to be able to do this?" "will i be a 'functional' member of society?"

he told me... "you can do this." :) and it was all i needed to hear. :)

it was great to revisit why i wanted to go into art in the first place. i already knew that i enjoyed it... it's why i can do it for 5, 6, 8, 10 hours straight and still not be drained of life. in fact, i will frequently lose track of time and just work.

but to see my teacher, and to rediscover the simple joy and peace that art can give you... it was a eye-opener, to say the least.

the rest of the day was also very fun.

we had brunch at a favorite place of mine, called venus. apparently, there was some incident with sean penn's car and guns in it being stolen?? but yeah... yummy brunch.

then pottery show.

then hanging out with betina and hanz and being introduced to grand theft auto and dynasty warriors.

dinner with kyung and his friend rob at cha'am (thai food~~!!!).

visiting dave for a little bit before coming home.

oh yeah, and for those that are interested.... i was indeed able to get 10 tickets for the lotr. rejoice! :)

now.... since i am sick, i will drag my infeebled body off to bed. (after i finish my blackcurrant tea)

pissed off bunny?

one of my bunnies has peed on my bed. i think it was stormy, because we had a small ordeal earlier today.

i came home from my second class and found her with a bit of scotch tape attached under her chin. it looks really funny, like she suddenly acquired a beard or something. sometimes, she'll chew and tear stuff that has sticky things like that. on prior occasions, she'd managed to get pieces of magazine stuck on her too. :P

this usually requires me to pick her up (which she HATES) and try to calm her down enough so that i can cut the fur that is attached to said sticky thing away from her with a pair of scissors.

since i don't have 4 hands (two to hold her, two to use the scissors while holding out the stuck on thing) this can be a precarious situation.

this time, it went pretty well. the hardest part was her running away from me when i was trying to catch her for the second time (she escaped the first time).

but otherwise, it was all ok... but i guess she was still miffed, since i came home to a nice big puddle on my comforter.

it went through the cover to my comforter, which is kind nasty, but nothing i can really do about it. and i'm now washing the cover (which, btw, has holes from her digging and chewing at it).

man.... i don't really know what to do about her chewing. :p

digital media art presentation

sadly enough, i was so tired that i fell asleep through a lot of this. even still, it was interesting. i was just too tired.

it reminded me of amanda a lot, i think especially after they mentioned meta.

basically, digital media art is the experimentation with information technology. so people like JODI and meta. it's interdisciplinar where you combine code with art, among other things.

and this is just one of the projects that was mentioned in the presentation of this department of art and design at sjsu.

this particular project, AMSUS: analysis and mapping of state of the union speeches, takes all the presidential speeches made in a president's term and cross checks for the occurance of a certain word in all the presidential speeches.

for example:
clinton mentions the word "children" 33 times in his first term, 28 times in his second term.

bush mentions it 7 times.

on the other hand.... bush mentions the word "weapons" 27 times from 2001-2003.

no other president really mentions it unless they're in war. the president that mentions it the second most frequently was FDR who mentioned it 7 times in his third term and only 3 times in his second term.

he was in term for WORLD WAR TWO.

the only other presidents that have mentioned it are those that had active wars going on. and even then, they don't tend to break 5 mentions.

thus further proving bush's strange propensity toward violence ("weapons") without a future ("children"). though i'm sure this is no surprise to anyone.

god, bush scares me.

also, mike mentioned that when they do a IQ extrapolation from presidential speeches, bush's comes out to about 80. he literally is mentally-challenged. scoring only five points higher than forrest gump.

at least forrest gump was charming. :P :)

degas sculptures

i went to the legion of honors for the first time to see the degas sculpture exhibit and the other things they had there, like the photos of india from the 19th-early 20th century.

the short version:
it's cool stuff

the long version:
degas' stuff was pretty cool. it's quite obvious that he didn't mean for those pieces to be finished pieces, rather.... studies to further his understanding about the human form. this explains the rough textures and unfinished qualities of some of the pieces. after all, he never had them bronzed or anything, some people that came across his studio and found all these charming wax and clay studies and decided to bronze them for all posterity.

so there really isn't all that much of his input in the choice or foundary or color of the patina since he was already dead when they bronzed them.

i was particularly interested in the arabesque pieces and decided i wanted to write my museum paper for art history on them. though they were studies and three separate pieces, i think the curator did a good job by placing them in succession in one glass area since they are essentially screenshots of a progression of an arabesque.

the sensitivity he had for muscle tension and how a body would have to shift in balance and weight to sustain that kind of stance was excellent and the pieces had a sense of vibrancy to them.

you see.... i didn't really like degas. rather, i didn't really take him all that seriously. i mostly thought of him as a person with really pretty pictures of ballet dancers. that he could do this with clay and that he had that much knowledge of the human form really upped my respect for him. (i don't think it was one of his primary concerns though)

i didn't like his horse studies that much, but it was pretty obvious that he was just starting to figure horses out, whereas he was an expert in ballet figures.

i really found the more twisting, tense, sinewy figures the most interesting. the way they reflect the light (which isn't intentional, since clay studies don't tend to reflect light) really impacts the way the form flows and is perceived by the eye.

by the time i was done staring at the arabesque series for 20-30 minutes, my brain was fried and i coasted through the rest of the exhibits.

i liked the rodins, but stanford definitely has a better collection. i was disappointed to realize that the denaid (sp?) wasn't at the legion of honor, as an old classmate had told me. but that's fine, that's why i bought the book on rodin back then.

there was a really funky picture of lucretia stabbing herself to death with a bare bosom. i find that kind of thing disturbing. interestingly enough, it's next to a portrait of judith lopping off some general's head (my old testament knowledge is a little rusty). so what is that supposed to be? the empowering of women next to a portrait of a woman that was enchained by patriarchal values?

ok. enough. i have more things to blog about :)

beanie babies and divorce

i thought i'd posted this earlier, but i guess not.

kwc showed this to me. pretty hilarious, so go check out this link:

try going to the original site if you can. you can have the full color version :)

another listing by thedrunkensailor:
Buy the Drunken Sailor a Frosty Mug! Burp! Give till it hurts!

my 100th entry!

and i think i have a sufficiently important enough post for it, too:

i am going to major in animation/illustration!

i heard the group talk yesterday and they seemed to be intense, nice people. and i'm just a freak enough to find it cool that you have to draw ~1500 bad drawings to have good quality work. i like the idea of having to sketch things all the time and constantly drawing and learning technical skills entices me.

their animation program has connections with pixar, dreamworks, disney, etc and the best of their students will have a chance to work at internships with these companies.

their illustration program seems intense and with a combination of animation concepts, i think i could really get into the comic field with their sequential storytelling elements and children's books, even though that's a small field.

it just seems like i can get what i want and if i really want to, i can work on my fine arts endeavors on the side with the technical skills provided to me from this department.

so i am very excited. even if my prospective schedule looks brutal and they talk about how there will be times where people get no sleep.

now i just have to figure out what classes i want to sign up for so that i can enroll for classes tomorrow :)

want to feel underaccomplished? :)

on 1010blog, kwc posted about "a site to demonstrate what slothful wastes we have made of our lives"... here's the link:

Things Other People Accomplished When They Were Your Age

At age 23:
- John Singleton directed his first film, "Boyz 'N the Hood."
- T. S. Eliot wrote "The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock."
- John Keats wrote "Ode on a Grecian Urn," which ends with the lines, "'Beauty is truth, truth beauty,' - that is all / Ye know on earth, and all ye need to know. "
- English poet Jane Taylor wrote "Twinkle, twinkle, little star."
- Margaret Mead traveled to the South Seas as part of a "giant rescue operation" to study primative cultures before they perished.
- Russian-American pianist Vladimir Horowitz made a spectacular concert debut when, impatient with the conductor's slow pace, he ran away from the conductor's tempo and finished Tchaikovsky's Piano Concerto No. 1 several bars ahead of time.
- Novelist, playwright, and short-story writer Carson McCullers wrote her acclaimed first book, The Heart Is a Lonely Hunter.
- Truman Capote published his first novel, Other Voices, Other Rooms.
- Jack Nicklaus became the youngest golfer to win the Masters.
- Francois-Louis Cailler manufactured the world's first eating chocolate to be commercially produced.

i'm only envious of the last one. actually... i'm not envious. i'm just thankful. :) a toast to francois-louis cailler~!

i don't think that this site is as effective as it could be. after all, listing just the 8 things for your age doesn't really convey how slothful you were being because it hasn't listed the bzillion other things that other people did before your age.

for instance,
At age 5:
- Actress Shirley Temple received an honorary Oscar.
- Mozart began composing minuets. Once when a second violinist failed to appear for a string quartet performance, Mozart took his place, even though he'd never seen the music.
- Yo-Yo Ma started playing Bach's Suites for Unaccompanied Cello. His father told him always to play a movement of Bach before bedtime, to assuage fear, hunger and loneliness.
- Pianist Mieczyslaw Horszowski played the Bach Inventions from memory.
- Irish mathematician William Rowan Hamilton learned Latin, Greek, and Hebrew.
- Ukrainian composer Sergei Sergeyevich Prokofiev composed his first piano work.
- American actress Helen Hayes made her stage debut.
- Spanish pianist Alicia de Larrocha gave her first public concert.
- Chilian pianist Claudio Arrau made his recital debut with pieces by Mozart, Beethoven and Schumann.
- Russian composers Tchaikovsky and Rachmaninoff began studying piano (separately).

i find that much more impressive that the accomplishments at my age of 23. :)

i mean... geez, at the age of 1:
- Jazz drummer Bernard "Buddy" Rich first appeared in his parents' vaudeville act.
- By this age, Christian Friedrich Heinecken had read the Pentateuch.

i think i'd just figured out how to walk and eat solid food by 1.

**wow, this is my 99th post. what should i do for my 100th? shoudln't be something special?

dang, i must've had a ton of crap to say to get this far. :)

i have some linked on the side bar.

but this was pretty cute, so i thought i'd link it to a specific comic:

this is where it's from:

a good scare...

i didn't sleep till 230 yesterday and this is why....

usually, when i get home and open my bedroom door, i'll have two bunnies greet me. stormy will want to be petted as a hello and beau licks me as a way of saying hello. sometimes, stormy is so excited to be let out into the living room, she has no time for pets, but usually beau will at least want to make sure i'm the right person and nudge me with his nose.

yesterday... stormy greeted me and then proceeded to go out into the living room, but something was a little different. beau hadn't rushed up and she was going out really hesitantly, as if something had scared her.

and then i did a quick sweep of my apartment to see if i'd accidently left him outside the room instead of in the room with stormy, though i was pretty sure that i'd left him there.

then i looked in all corners, nooks, crannies.... and still no beau.

at this point, i was getting scared, because i was having thoughts of bunny-napping, bunny-death in a corner, bunny hurt in a corner...

finally i checked to see if he was under my comforter somehow and lifted my comforter. he wasn't there.

but the comforter was way too heavy.... hmmm...

he had managed to find his way into my comforter! and got stuck, and unlike stormy, who is a spaz, he was scared and just stayed still under the cover without try to destroy his way out.

note to self: bunnies are ingenious in ways to get themselves into trouble.

i got him out and gave him a treat for being a brave boy, within a few minutes he was eating and acting like everything was pretty normal.

good bunny.

according to parakkum:
Now we just need to Beau-proof the comforter. :) Or it might be Beau-proof now, since bunnies learn and all. I wouldn't want to go back into the Warren of No Return.

i am procrastinating...

and taking personality tests:

uni
You are Form 3, Unicorn: The Innocent.

"And The Unicorn knew she wasn't meant to
go into the Dark Wood. Disregarding the advice
given to her by the spirits, Unicorn went
inside and bled silver blood.. For her
misdeed, the world knew evil."

Some examples of the Unicorn Form are Eve
(Christian) and Pandora (Greek).
The Unicorn is associated with the concept of
innocence, the number 3, and the element of
water.
Her sign is the twilight sun.

As a member of Form 3, you are a curious
individual. You are drawn to new things and
become fascinated with ideas you've never come
in contact with before. Some people may say
you are too nosey, but it's only because you
like getting to the bottom of things and
solving them. Unicorns are the best friends to
have because they are inquisitive.

my life better not depend on this quiz...

kwc's post on how I hate the 80s had an interesting quiz. he also alludes to my complete lack of pop culture of that time. :)

so i took it upon myself to take that quiz he linked to... here are some of the corrections i got, my answers will be in quotations (oh yeah, don't read these first, if you're planning on taking the quiz, since they are the ANSWERS. but then again, i guess you can cheat if you really want to. CHEATER!):

32. Who do you want me to be to make you "be" with me?
It's the 80's. Of COURSE he want's her to -sleep- with him.
-- apparently, i was too young, learning english and clueless about sex to pick up on this *subtle* theme of 80s music :)

36. Oh I, I just died in your arms tonight It must've been some kind of "blank."
Were you part of the 80's? It must have been some kind of KISS.
-- i thought this particular response summed up the extent of my knowledge of this time

51. "blank" "blank" Amadeus
Oh come on now... Rock Me Amadeus!
-- at this point, i think i'm just trying the poor guy's patience :)

58. 'Cause your friends don't "blank" and if they don't "blank"; Well they're no friends of mine
Dance, man...Dance.
-- again with the condescension :P

59. For just one moment To be bold and "blank" At your side
Naked, what else?
-- do i need to mention that i didn't learn about sex until the 6th grade? that places in me the 90s.

60. Your heart sweats, your body shakes Another "blank" is what it takes
Kiss...You must have been born after 1985.
-- well, he's not that far off, if you think about it. i wasn't in the country till 1986, and according to kwc, i was still learning to say "better" (there are two t's dammit)

Bonus Question 2: I've got friends in "high" places.
Oh my. Nice little cultural vaccuume you live in.(LOW places)
-- when i realized that i basically wasn't going to get anything, i figured that i might as well guess wildly :)

You grew up to this. No Bonus. No penalty.
5 point bonus for telling me where you saw this. Thanks!
Final Score: 21.5
basically, that means i got a 16.5 from my own skills. not too bad. :P :)

no surprise here. :) but entertaining none the less. :)

my first giving blood experience...

so.... let's just make it clear and say right now that i didn't actually give blood.

that's right. after going through all the forms and mini-physical and passing the iron test... i found myself with a nurse that was nice, but didn't really have great bedside manner.

you don't openly worry about how small the person's vein is in comparison to the pretty big needle right in front of them. you also don't say that the difference between a blood test needle and this needle is like night and day.

ultimately, i ended up with three different nurses looking for my vein. then she tried to insert the needle, my blood didn't go, so another nurse came to readjust it twice and my vein collapsed.

they said i can come back whenever i want, since i didn't really give blood. the blood made it about three inches down the tube. :P

how sad. :)

but at least i know that i can pretty much walk in whenever i want, instead of rushing over to meet an appointment right after a full day of class.

this knowledge will help greatly with my successfully giving blood again in the future.

random stuff

i was educated in the ways of the matrix yesterday, as i crammed the second movie so that i can watch the third movie on wednesday. thanks, ken, amanda, will for having all us there.

i am giving blood for the first time in my life today. well... donating blood, anyway. i've had blood drawn from me many times for stupid tests.

it's making me a little nervous and i'm trying to keep myself hydrated and fed. that is a novel concept on tuesdays, since i tend to find myself caught up in schoolwork and projects. but we'll see.

i figure, i gained enough weight to give blood, i might as well. :)

what is my religion? you tell me....

The top score on the list below represents the faith that Belief-O-Matic, in its less than infinite wisdom, thinks most closely matches your beliefs. However, even a score of 100% does not mean that your views are all shared by this faith, or vice versa.

Belief-O-Matic then lists another 26 faiths in order of how much they have in common with your professed beliefs. The higher a faith appears on this list, the more closely it aligns with your thinking.

1. Mainline to Liberal Christian Protestants (100%)
2. Reform Judaism (98%)
3. Liberal Quakers (97%)
4. Unitarian Universalism (90%)
5. Neo-Pagan (80%)
6. Bahá'í Faith (75%)
7. New Age (74%)
8. Orthodox Quaker (69%)
9. Secular Humanism (67%)
10. Mahayana Buddhism (66%)
11. Sikhism (65%)
12. Orthodox Judaism (62%)
13. Theravada Buddhism (60%)
14. Taoism (59%)
15. Islam (55%)
16. Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints (Mormons) (50%)
17. Mainline to Conservative Christian/Protestant (50%)
18. New Thought (50%)
19. Nontheist (50%)
20. Jainism (49%)
21. Scientology (46%)
22. Seventh Day Adventist (41%)
23. Christian Science (Church of Christ, Scientist) (37%)
24. Hinduism (35%)
25. Jehovah's Witness (30%)
26. Eastern Orthodox (26%)
27. Roman Catholic (26%)

basically, it means that i dislike people tell me what to do (whether it is in the guise of a divine voice or not) since rigid ideas made by people tend to be stupid. besides, those ideas are almost universally sexist against women and put men in unfair positions without much sympathy for anyone else that doesn't fit into a nice label/category/group.

i'm not all that surprised with the results i got, though the order of compatible religion surprised me. after all, i thought that i'd score more poorly with the mormons, but i guess not. and some of the religions... i'm not sure what they exactly are. but just means i should do some more research into it, that's all. :)

i was too offended to post anatomically incorrect boobies on my website, so i don't feel like having the "which hot marvel babe are you?" results here.

however.... here are some interesting things about that test (don't read if you haven't taken it yet and plan on taking it):
- if you like the color orange and you want to fight in a team with your loved ones... you will pretty much guarantee yourself to be phoenix, unless you like blood with your violence, at which point you're always psylocke.
- if you like the color white you get a greater variety for your answers: rogue, storm, mystique. if you like blood, once again... psylocke (who is this chick??). if you like to talk and use your mind... phoenix again.

yummy thoughts

what would i do for some bonbons right now.... or some of those ice creamy cream puff things~! :)

fairly busy day :)

i don't really remember what we did yesterday. oh yeah... talked to management about my satellite thing, had maintenance fix some stuff. watched el mariachi and desperado, and spirits within. big movie day. went out to eat sono sushi. and went to the bookstore to find a book that parakkum was looking for.

today....
massive cleaning of bunny things - making a new litterbox out of the sandbox they decided was to be their litterbox by pooping and peeing everywhere in it, and cleaning out their cage and litter box and refilling everything with new hay
satellite was fixed.
went out to buy me insulation for my sliding door to porch which is constantly slightly open because of the flat wire for my directv and a doorbell so that i don't have to keep my ears at constant attention for a door knock.
watched the annual release of monarch butterflies at the children's art museum
walked around the japanese friendship garden in san jose
costco
went to a new comic shop that opened across the street
dinner at a japanese restaurant.

as for the new comic shop, i'm really excited. i hope the guy does well and i'm trying to think of a way to support him. maybe i buy all the trades and parakkum buys all the individual issues? something like that.

now i'm revelling in the joy of having tv again. and tivo! i am watching teen titans. :)

yay~

engrish subtitles for lord of the rings

me and parakkum have been watching the extended version of the fellowship of the ring. this reminded me of the stuff that ken was looking at on my computer :)
