Millennium Actress

I don't usually do movie reviews, but this movie was too excellent. It's by the same guy who directed Perfect Blue (which I haven't seen) and Tokyo Godfathers (which I loved) -- Satoshi Kon.

Millennium Actress

As with Tokyo Godfathers, I love Millennium Actress's atypical storytelling. Both movies have layers of symbolism and story arcs that meld in a subtle and complex way. They both use great composition and color to the advance and focus the story. Tokyo Godfathers deals with symbols and the heart of Christmas and miracles. Millennium Actress spans different Japanese historical eras (spanning 1000 years, thus the Millennium) as well as its film industry with its play within a play storytelling.

For Millennium Actress, I really liked the different art styles and palettes they used for the each era of history they were depicting. It also has awesome shot to shot transitions -- though, admittedly, I haven't watched as many movies as most people.
