Encouraged by the Institute for Education and Social Policy at New York University, parents and community groups banded together to form CC9, the Community Collaborative to Improve District 9 Schools. In addition to fighting for safer streets around schools and better trained teachers and principals, CC9 last year brokered a remarkable deal between the teachers' union and the school system to create a "lead teacher" program, in which veteran educators were paired to share a class so they could spend half their time mentoring less experienced colleagues. Lead teachers are paid an extra $10,000 a year.
