Comment on "Thoughts on the abortion ruling?"

I'm sad and disappointed but not surprised. I don't know why pro-lifer's think that women jump up and down for joy at the chance to have an abortion. Like its not a decision that women take very seriously. They act like women treat abortion like a birth control option....oops got pregnant, oh well just go to the abortion clinic. And the partial birth abortion ban just ticks me off. For one its extremely rare, 0.15% And this is only done when there are no other options. From what I heard on NPR yesterday, there is no exception if the womans life is in danger. Usually, the fetus has severe deformities and is sometimes deceased. Or the mother is having serious complications that put her at risk. I know if its a decision that Will and I had to make I would be heartbroken. But as I told him when I was pregnant, my life comes first until she's born. We can have other children and while I would be devastated, sometimes you have to make hard decisions. This is a medical issue that should be between a woman and her doctor not politicians. And now pro-lifers are going to try to get abortion overturned completely and that just makes me even more angry. Unbelievable. I took a bunch of women's studies classes in college. I found out right before I graduated that I was only a couple classes short of a minor but it was too late. Anyway, we read a article about a woman in the 20's who had 5 kids already and could barely feed them. And this was during the Comstock Law days when women didn't even have access to reproductive or birth control info. So she got pregnant with the 6th and was so depressed because she didn't know how she was going to feed another child so she had an illegal abortion and died leaving 5 children motherless. That is the world that pro-lifers want to go back to. Yes, at least we'll have birth control options (though a lot of people want to take that away too) but we are still going to have woman dying trying to abort. There are already cases of teenage girls in states that require parental consent dying from illegal abortions. Why don't people get it. Women have been trying to abort unplanned pregnancy's since the beginning of time and its not going to stop. Women are just going to be dying too.
Sorry shelly, touchy subject for me.

- Tonya

Well, on the topic of booze... you will be in beer country. (bier. pivo. sür. in german, czech, and hungarian respectively. pivo will get you far because it's the same word in most slavic languages, and all the slavic countries, they like their beer.) In fact, Budejovice (home of the original uncorrupted-by-Anheiser-Busch Budweiser) is just a couple hours from Prague and there are regular trains going between. So beer is a good theme. Also, you can enjoy absinthe in C.R. and Hungary... I think, though to be honest I never felt anything but drunk on it.

If you're interested in an art theme, I found public art of all kinds was pretty interesting. From gargoyles to grafitti. Well, more the grafitti for me. ^_^ Especially since you'll be in a couple of places that were behind the iron curtain, some people have really taken advantage of their freedom to express themselves publicly.

Or if you want to be *really* nerdy. The Hapsburgs. Their fingerprints are still on everything, somehow.

g'luck!

- meta

I loved Switzerland -- after spending several weeks in European towns, Switzerland is nice because you're up in the Alps and can do more outdoorsy stuff. I was getting a bit tired of the city and train bustle, and even two days there was a nice respite.

- kwc

well,

people generally like michigan avenue. a lot of the original buildings were destroyed by a fire in the early 1900s, but a few buildings remain on michigan ave. there's lakeshore drive, that is just beautiful, and the museum there, as well. also, some people really like the comedy clubs in chicago, and i saw one that wasn't too bad. the chinatown there is somewhat unremarkable, and the neighborhoods near uchicago can be sketchy, so be careful :)

have a safe trip!

- rcp

I've only ever been a tourist there, myself, but I really enjoyed Ed Debevic's. It's a Michigan Ave. (that's the main drag in downtown, right?) attraction... an old style diner, where they employ actors to give you some sass. Quite a lot of fun.

Although, I only went there like 10 years ago, so not sure if it's still there/still fun.

- bp

i often find that there are two approaches to viewing life:

work hard, enjoy later.
work and enjoy now.

unfortunately, those two often seem to be in conflict with each other, and i find that immigrants especially befall on hard times that force them to choose number 1. but if you are blessed enough to have the choice to do number 2, do it. my parents sometimes tell me that they wish they had done more of 2, because you never know if later will come, or that if it does come, that you will be in the physical state to enjoy it. plus, it's not entirely reasonable that you can work & enjoy yourself, or enjoy yourself a little bit now (indulge) and come back to work. but that's just me.

- rcp

A while back a couple friends of mine went to australia... right out of high school. They managed to find this volunteer opportunity there, I dunno, building stuff in the outback or something. But this is an option you might want to consider. It's more structured than gallavanting about on your own, and it will make it very easy for you to meet people, but at the same time there's more sense of purpose to it than just a tour group. Of course, you are kinda paying to work, but as I understand it, it's not all work -- there's fun as well. There are a lot of opportunities like this around, and a great variety of work, so if you don't want to do manual labor or teaching english there are still interesting things to do, especially since you have reasonable knowledge of computers... I have a couple friends who work at Volunteers in Asia (yeah yeah, you're not interested in Asia, but I'm certain there are equivalent operations for other continents).

Also, I think my friend got into the VIA thing by first being a volunteer there... now she works for the organization full time. I don't necessarily think you'll get sucked into the life of a non-profit worker (which will make it impossible to retire at 50). My point is I guess, that doing something like that may give you insight into what you want to do when you get back.

Courage, cshell! Be as crazy as you want to be.

- metamanda

A couple of things you might want to try: * counter offer the time for the date -- for that guy who always picks times that are already spoken for, a response like "I've already got plans for Sunday, but how about Tuesday?" This response is usually pretty positive -- guy doesn't feel shot down, and your counteroffer shows that you're interested. * For the guy who you can't find an excuse to go see, your recent decision to change groups may be the perfect excuse to see him. "Hi, [fill in the name], I've been thinking about changing groups and I noticed you in the cafeteria the other day, and I thought maybe I should go stop by, chat and ask what your group is up to." * And what might be potentially interesting conversations, you could ask them about where they have gone on vacation or ask for suggestions. If you steer the conversation right, you might even be able to figure out whether they are attached or married. I haven't been vacationing enough to really been many places, but I really enjoyed Tokyo in the summer.

- m
