I have to say up front that I'm pro-choice, so if that's going to offend your sensibilities, stop reading. NOW.
Ok, with that out of the way - what are people's feelings on the recent Supreme Court abortion decision? I found out about this because I'm on the Planned Parenthood action list, so they send emails about "pro-choice" issues, but I didn't see it in other news outlets. Granted, I haven't watched the news in a few days, but still...
Posted by cshell at April 19, 2007 09:55 AMI'm sad and disappointed but not surprised. I don't know why pro-lifer's think that women jump up and down for joy at the chance to have an abortion. Like its not a decision that women take very seriously. They act like women treat abortion like a birth control option....oops got pregnant, oh well just go to the abortion clinic. And the partial birth abortion ban just ticks me off. For one its extremely rare, 0.15% And this is only done when there are no other options. From what I heard on NPR yesterday, there is no exception if the womans life is in danger. Usually, the fetus has severe deformities and is sometimes deceased. Or the mother is having serious complications that put her at risk. I know if its a decision that Will and I had to make I would be heartbroken. But as I told him when I was pregnant, my life comes first until she's born. We can have other children and while I would be devastated, sometimes you have to make hard decisions. This is a medical issue that should be between a woman and her doctor not politicians. And now pro-lifers are going to try to get abortion overturned completely and that just makes me even more angry. Unbelievable. I took a bunch of women's studies classes in college. I found out right before I graduated that I was only a couple classes short of a minor but it was too late. Anyway, we read a article about a woman in the 20's who had 5 kids already and could barely feed them. And this was during the Comstock Law days when women didn't even have access to reproductive or birth control info. So she got pregnant with the 6th and was so depressed because she didn't know how she was going to feed another child so she had an illegal abortion and died leaving 5 children motherless. That is the world that pro-lifers want to go back to. Yes, at least we'll have birth control options (though a lot of people want to take that away too) but we are still going to have woman dying trying to abort. There are already cases of teenage girls in states that require parental consent dying from illegal abortions. Why don't people get it. Women have been trying to abort unplanned pregnancy's since the beginning of time and its not going to stop. Women are just going to be dying too.
Sorry shelly, touchy subject for me.
